Maybe it's because of the lack of drunk college students, but my husband and I prefer this location to the Downtown location. The chorizo and pork belly tacos are great, as are the wings. We both like the black bean patties over the beef, and we aren't vegetarians! It's a small place with friendly staff.

The burgers were very good and an extensive variety of them. The fries were overdone, the seating sucked, there were numerous little black fruit flies buzzing around, and our waitress didn't know the answers to my questions and did not try to find out the answers. Great burgers but overall, the things I listed really turned me off.

The chicken burger and fries I had were pretty good. The beer wasn't that great though. The first two draft's I tried to order they were out of and the other two beers I ended up having (that the waitress recommended) weren't very good. Wouldn't drink their beer again, but might stop by for a burger and the friendly service.

I really wanted to love it here because it's within walking distance to my in-laws and would be a great place to visit regularly when we're in town. But we didn't have a great experience. The server seemed to have a great personality but didn't engage with us at all and didn't tell us about the menu or offer to explain anything either. The menu is very limited- burgers or chicken or black bean burgers with fresh cut fries- there are many creative variations of each sandwich which was fun. The fries were crazy salty and a little hard to eat with so much salt on them (and I don't usually mind salt). The burgers were not my taste at all- quite dry and bland, the buns were delicious but couldn't hold the burger or toppings- I had to eat mine with a fork and knife. They forgot to put the toppings on my Maynard burger so they brought the guacamole and garlic aioli on the side which was kind of disappointing and not quite the same. The food is served on very small plates so the fries fell off all over the table. The booths are cool and it looks nice inside but is a very small restaurant. Overall it felt like weird experience with the friendly-looking but not friendly-acting server and the not as great of food as we hoped.

I try not to read reviews for a place before I post one because I don't want to be influenced by others. I happened to read these before going though and I'm glad that some of the comments did not hold true. My friend and I each ordered a burger and they were very juicy and moist. You could tell they used a better quality beef. I did have to finish my last several bites up with a fork, though, as the bun didn't hold up. The fries that came with it were average-good. Service was fine, although I'm sure of it that the waitress did not smile once.

The menu lists "gluten free" but if you have gluten intolerance or Celiac's you should shy away from here. "Gluten free" burgers mean "no bun" and the waitress offers no reassurance that she is confident about GF and the menu ingredients. We ordered the El Dorado burger without a bun and substituted a lettuce salad (there is no gluten free dressing option) for fries. The food tasted great and came in a timely manner.

Dig the burgers, very good variety of burgers and chicken sandwiches. Beer selection is also pretty decent especially with Iowa beers. I also appreciate their selection of whiskey. Fries are to die for. I'll be back many times!

I have been here twice and each time I have ordered the same thing because I loved it so much: Defiance burger: bacon, sautéed mushrooms with bleu cheese spread. So freaking delicious. I'm not a burger person and I devoured that Defiance burger. Seating is extremely limited, good selection of brews!

Average burgers nothing special about them, has a lot of options to choose from, wings weren't that good though, def had better.....All in all, Just an average place that may need to go to Jamaica to get her groove back.

We just ate here for the first time after hearing nothing but good things and I have to say I am impressed. The burger selection is amazing and they taste as good as they sound. Service is very friendly and helpful. Only draw backs are that seating is limited and the mixed drinks are kinda pricey for a burger place. I will for sure go back!

This place serves consistently mediocre to bad food. The topping varieties on the burger do not make up for the fact that the burger itself is dried out and cooked beyond recognition. There is no flavor in the beef at all. I don;t know if they are using grass-fed extra lean beef or what but there is no flavor and they are super dried out and burnt. If that's what you are looking for in a $10 burger, this is the place for you. There are way better burgers for $10 in this town. I'd suggest Motley Cow's Bacon Cheese Burger which is always great. Beer selection at short's is great, the service is good/great and that's worth two stars. If they taught the kitchen staff how to cook burgers, this place would have no trouble being 4 stars. I absolutly don;t get how they can put so much thought into the menu and churn out such crappy patties.

Best burgers anywhere? No but I've never been disappointed. A nice thick hand formed patty, great local draft beer selection, excellent seasoned fries. What's not to like?

I had lunch here recently with my wife. We had only been to the downtown Short's once right after it opened, so we wanted to try the new one on our side of town. Based on only this one visit, I have to say I was disappointed with the Eastside Short's. We both ordered burgers (18 S Clinton for me, Beaconsfield for my wife). My wife had the fries but I was able to substitute a half wedge salad for fries. I had a pint of draft beer ($3.75) and my wife had iced tea. Both burgers were way overdone to the point of being dry and crumbly. The menu states that burgers are cooked medium to medium well but there still should be some juice in sight with the rich beef they use (in burgers, juice=flavor). The fries and salad were excellent. The iced tea was room temp and had no ice (I gave her the ice from my water). Service was adequate and friendly but there was a long 10 minute gap between our finishing the meal and being offered the check. The tab was $28.80 which seemed pretty high to me for lunch for two in a bar in Iowa City. We are very glad to see another restaurant on the East side, but this one needs some more attention to detail, especially at these prices.

At a place specializing in burgers I would expect a great burger. Mine was dry and quite frankly without much flavor at all. I can get a much better burger at several places in town. Won't be coming back.

Been here a few times and never left disappointed. Today was no exception. Got the Dundee burger and it was tasty. Little more overdone than I'd like but still very tasty! Better load up on napkins!

This is one of those times when I wish Yelp had half stars. Short's is really a 3.5 star place, but I just can't give it a 4. So I guess it's actually a 3.49 and I'll round down. The good. Large selection of burgers and chicken sandwiches. Small, but well crafted selection of beer, wine, and spirits. Kudos to the Iowa draft selections. The A-OK+ Burger toppings are plentiful and also have great flavor. I could use more heat in their spicy toppings, but then I like things hot when I order spicy. Chicken was well cooked and not dry which happens far too often on grilled chicken sandwiches at other places. The A-OK- The fires are only so-so. They're well salted, but that's about it. My burgers are always cooked past what I want. They always seem to be in the medium-well to well done category which makes the burger dry. The Meh. The last 3 times I've been there the buns have been dry and start to fall apart halfway through. I'd hate to see how long they lasted if the burger was as juicy as I prefer and a mid-rare to medium temp. Still a better burger then you'll get at any of the fast food places. Will still go there if I'm in the area and craving a burger or for one of their Wednesday fundraisers.

The Eastside Short's Burger is not nearly as good as it used to be. The downtown location is not as good either, but still better than the Eastside location. If you are looking for a huge burger and a load of French fries to fill up your belly. This would definitely be the place for under $10. Not a lot of seating so wait times during prime hours are to be expected. Good beer and hard liquor selection for those looking for a drink.

Went to this location for the first time as my husband recommended it after a great work lunch in the past. He was correct! Busy tonight but was seated at the bar which suited us fine. The selection of burgers will not disappoint. The service was timely and efficient. Liked the fries... could have been crisper and then it would've been ! The manager/owner?? was busy tidying up and greeting new customers, I thought it was nice when we left the restaurant and approaching our car (that we parked at the nearby bank) he was taking out the garbage & yelled up to us "Thank You!" and waved - nice guy!

Have to say I read about this place having great food. Well they were WRONG!!!. Not good if you have more then 4 people in your party. Food is nothing to write home about. Took my family there and they don't have a kids menu. Not welcoming to families with kids. The service was not good at all.

Waitress was a giggling moron who knew NOTHING about the menu. Was more concerned about playing handsy with the cook than customer service. Burger was ok, nothing spectacular especially for the price. Maybe downtown has waitresses that are high?

My first visit to Shorts on the Eastside. It didn't disappoint me. By far, the best hamburgers in Iowa City. I highly recommend Shorts.
